Human H5N6 Fatality in China

08/02/2024

The Center for Health Protection at the Department of Health in Hong Kong reported a case of H5N6v avian influenza in a 70-year-old woman.  Infection was contracted visiting Anhui Province where the decedent had contact with live poultry in a wet market.  Hong Kong authorities have warned residents when visiting the Mainland to avoid “purchasing live or freshly slaughtered poultry” and should avoid touching poultry or their droppings.

So why do we still have wet markets in the U.S?  Their presence is danger to flocks, workers and consumers.
