The Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority of Holland has documented 156 cases of Salmonella Enteritidis.  Investigations are still in progress, but it appears that egg production units infected with SE may have been responsible for direct infection of consumers. A second indirect route of transmission was determined with shells from infected flocks having been incorporated in animal feed. This apparently resulted in infection of livestock and poultry, further amplifying the prevalence of the pathogen in the chain of production.
