Mexico Undergoing Severe Drought Conditions
|
07/28/2024 |
According to the North American Drought Monitor, Mexico is under a severe drought with 76 percent of the Nation affected. Currently, northwestern, central and southern Mexico are all impacted with water rationing mandated in areas of high population density.
Some relief occurred in June following the passage of tropical storm Alberto that brought rain to the Yucatan Peninsula and some areas in central Mexico.
The drought will require importation of grains and oilseeds to supplement a shortfall in domestic production. The incoming Administration under Dr. Claudio Sheinbaum will be faced with an escalation in food costs and logistic challenges to the supply chain. This will influence the policy of the Government towards restrictions on GM cultivars and glyphosate application. Notwithstanding the serious situation, the outgoing President, is intent on entrenching restrictions on GMO in the National Constitution in a Congressional session in September before he leaves office.
