Public health authorities in Norway are investigating outbreaks of salmonellosis in homeowners with 33 cases reported year-to-date. None of the patients revealed a history of foreign travel. Salmonella Typhimurium isolates with a common genome have been identified in ten patients ranging in age from 1 to 70 years in age. It is hypothesized based on whole genome sequence assays that there is an interaction between wild songbirds at feeding stations and cats that prey on these birds. According to the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, S. Typhimurium has been isolated from over 100 cats
Domestic cats if infected are intermittent fecal shedders of Salmonella, representing a potential risk for members of their households.
