According to a recent bill passed by the Legislature of Rhode Island, the cage-free housing deadline will be extended from July 2026 to January 2030. Rhode Island follows Utah and Michigan in extending deadlines for conversion.

This action will not apply to eggs and egg products introduced into the state that apparently will still have to conform to the UEP 2016 Guidelines. The extension is a concession to Little Rhody Farms the single commercial egg producer in the State since the company is unable to raise approximately $1.5 million for conversion.

Concurrent with the extension of housing deadlines, a number of chains are delaying the date of conversion to sourcing cage-free eggs. This is denoted by the 2024 plateau in the rate of conversion.
