Residents of San Antonio Limon in the state of Veracruz mounted a protest against a hog processing plant on June 20th. At issue is the pollution of underground water and excessive abstraction from the aquifer supplying residents of the region. Similar issues have been raised with respect to U.S. hog plants including the Seaboard Foods packing plant in Guyon, OK.
An unfortunate result of the protest was the death of two demonstrators who were shot by police overreacting to the protest.
