According to ProMED , veterinary authorities in Japan reported a case of HPAI in a flock of 58,000 ‘poultry’ (unspecified type, presumed laying hens). The flock was located in Tomisato in Chiba Prefecture on the east central coast. Despite a diagnosis on April 29th the report to WOAH was delayed for two weeks. Close to a million poultry have been depopulated in 12 outbreaks year-to-date. Migratory and free-living birds are regarded as the source of infection, as confirmed by surveillance. A similar situation exists in South Korea and Taiwan.
