Following extensive opposition to the export of live animals for slaughter, the Government of Australia has announced that consignments of sheep will cease in May 2028. This decision follows the October 2024 recommendation of an Independent Panel.
Recently, animal rights activist and mainstream media have reported on extensive losses in sheep and cattle and inhumane conditions during transport of animals shipped to the Middle East and Indonesia respectively for ritual slaughter.
Following Brexit, the U.K. Parliament passed legislation banning exporting of live animals for slaughter. This was not possible while the nation was a member of the E.U.
