Coast guard Captain David O’Connell, Commander of the Maryland-National Capital Region announced the opening of a temporary channel under the collapsed Francis Scott Key bridge. With a draught of 12 foot, a 264 foot horizontal opening and a 96 foot vertical clearance the temporary channel would allow passage of relatively small, commercially essential vessels.
Removal of wreckage in the Patapsco River is in progress but will take weeks before there is free passage to the Port of Baltimore. Using floating cranes and barges responders are removing containers from the mv Dali in preparation from freeing the vessel from the tangled wreckage of the bridge.
