According to the California Farm Water Coalition, a sharp reduction in available water has resulted in up to 700,000 acres being fallowed in 2022. Almost 40 percent of irrigated crop-land in California will be denied surface water in 2020 impacting fresh fruit, vegetables, orchards and leafy greens.
Bill Diedrich, president of the Coalition noted that every acre left unplanted because of a shortage of irrigation water results in 50,000 fewer salads. Shortage of water will also result in a reduction of the workforce by 25,000 with an economic impact attaining $3 billion in 2022.
