Listeria Isolated from Raw Milk from New York State Dairy

In 2010 Shunpike Dairy transitioned to selling raw milk to customers from the farm in accordance with restrictions imposed by New York State. Routine assay demonstrated the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in milk from the dairy. At this time, there have been no reported cases of infection although it is noted that the incubation period can extend up to two months. Pregnant women, the elderly, children and the immunosuppressed are at higher risk of infection and demonstrate more serious clinical presentations compared to other demographics.

There is no justification for consuming raw milk that is inherently dangerous. The CDC has recently identified raw-milk outbreaks due to infection with E.coli, Salmonella, Listeria and more recently Brucella a pathogen that has been virtually eradicated in industrialized nations.
