Alliance to End Plastic Waste


Approximately thirty global companies have committed more than $1 billion through the non-profit Alliance to End Plastic Waste. Among the supporters are Chevron Phillips Chemical, Exxon Mobil, BASF, Shell Chemical, Lyondell and consumer companies Dow and Proctor and Gamble. The accumulated funds will develop programs to minimize and dispose of plastic waste.

According to the Houston Chronicle, the chairman of the Alliance, David Taylor, CEO of Proctor and Gamble noted “Everyone agrees that plastic waste does not belong in our oceans or anywhere in the environment. This is a complex and serious global challenge that calls for swift action and strong leadership.”

The Alliance will embark on programs of education, technological innovation and removal of waste from highly-polluted areas. The initial concentration will be in Southeast Asia where 60 percent of plastic waste is generated by China, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. It is estimated that 80 percent of plastic waste ends up in oceans carried from urban areas by river systems. It is estimated that less than 10 percent of all plastic packaging and other applications is ever recycled.

The Alliance intends to:

  • Establish an incubator network in cooperation with venture-capital companies to develop and promote plastic recycling technology
  • Work with the United Nations Environment to train government officials and community leaders to establish localized waste disposal and recycling
  • Support the Renew the Oceans Program operated by Renewology to remove plastic from ten major rivers responsible for transporting waste to oceans
  • Establish an information base to facilitate projects through establishing standards and distributing reliable statistics.

Disposal of plastic waste is of special interest to the egg production industry which uses both PET and polystyrene containers that are engendering some degree of consumer resistance despite the convenience and advantages associated with these materials.
